Eight letters needs a letter already on the board
You hold seven tiles, so an eight-letter word necessarily uses a letter already played. That makes eight-letter plays a different skill from seven-letter ones: you are not looking at your rack in isolation, you are looking for a place where your rack plus one board letter completes something.
In Scrabble this still earns the fifty-point bonus, since you have used all seven of your tiles. Eight-letter bingos are less common than seven-letter ones purely because they require the board to cooperate, not because they are worth less.
Where the openings appear
The board letters that most often complete an eight are the common ones — S, E, R, A and T. A lone S sitting at the end of a word is the classic hook, and experienced players watch for whether leaving one exposed hands the opponent an easy bingo lane.
This is also why board control matters in the endgame. Closing the lanes where an eight-letter play could land is a defensive move worth making even at the cost of a few points on your own turn.
Reading eight-letter words
Most eight-letter words are visibly built: a root plus a prefix, a suffix, or both. Browsing this length by a required letter is useful mainly for spotting those constructions, since recognising that -ATION or -NESS is available changes how you look at a rack.
Outside board games, eight letters is a common length in crossword grids and in word searches, where the interest is less in scoring and more in whether the word fits the pattern you already have.
