Words that must contain your letters
Different from unscrambling: results may be longer than your input, as long as every letter you typed appears somewhere in the word.
Containing is not the same as unscrambling
An unscrambler treats your letters as a budget: it spends them, and never returns a word needing a letter you did not supply. This tool treats them as a requirement instead. Type QU and you get every word that contains a Q and a U somewhere — QUIET, EQUAL, TRANQUIL — including words far longer than your input.
That difference decides which tool to reach for. If you are holding seven tiles and want to know what you can play, you want the unscrambler. If you know a word contains certain letters and want to see the field of candidates, you want this one.
Adding a length
The length filter is what makes the results usable. Searching for words containing E returns most of the dictionary; searching for five-letter words containing E and pinning the length turns that into a list you can actually scan. Crosswords hand you the length for free — count the squares.
Letters can appear in any order and anywhere in the word, and repeats count. Typing EE requires two Es, not one, which is a quick way to narrow a stubborn crossword clue where you have spotted a double.
When to use it instead of the pattern solver
Use this when you know which letters are in the word but not where they sit. Use the pattern solver when you know positions — C_T_E has the C first and the T third, and no amount of letter-containment searching will express that.
The two pair up well on a half-finished crossword: run the pattern first to respect the squares you have filled, and fall back to a containment search when the pattern returns nothing and you suspect one of your filled squares is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
Does the order of my letters matter?
No. The letters can appear anywhere in the word, in any order. If order and position matter to you, the pattern solver is the tool that expresses that.
How do I require a doubled letter?
Type it twice. SS returns only words carrying at least two S's, which is often enough on its own to crack a crossword clue where you have spotted a double.
Why are the results longer than what I typed?
Because your letters are a requirement, not a budget. The word must contain them, but it is free to carry any number of other letters as well. Set a word length to cap that.
Can I search for a letter combination like TH?
You can, but note that this finds words containing a T and an H in any positions, not the pair side by side. For adjacent letters, use the pattern solver or browse the letter-pair word lists.
How many letters can I require at once?
Up to ten, though in practice four or five already narrows most of the dictionary to a readable list. Adding more usually returns nothing rather than something better.
