Pictionary words, ready to draw

What makes a good Pictionary word
A good drawing word is concrete, recognisable from a silhouette, and has exactly one obvious answer. APPLE works because three strokes and a stem settle it. FREEDOM is hard for the opposite reason — there is no object to draw, so the drawer has to build a symbol the table can decode. And a word with a common synonym fails differently: the drawer succeeds, the guessers say the other word, and the round stalls on a technicality nobody enjoys.
The easy list is built from nouns a child could sketch: animals, food, household objects. Medium adds actions and compound ideas that need two or three drawn elements working together. Hard is where abstraction starts — words that force the drawer to invent a visual shorthand the table has to decode.
Choosing a difficulty for your group
Mixed ages play best on easy with the occasional medium round. A table of adults who play often will find easy boring within ten minutes, and the fun of the game is almost entirely in the gap between what the drawer can manage and what the guessers can read.
A useful house rule for uneven groups is to let each drawer pick the difficulty for their own turn. Confident drawers take hard words for bragging rights; hesitant ones keep the game moving with easy ones, and nobody is stuck on a word they cannot attempt.
Running the game without the box
You need paper, a timer and this page. Split into two teams, give each drawer sixty seconds, and have them draw one word per turn while their own team guesses. No letters, no numbers, no gestures — the classic rules exist because each of those shortcuts ruins the guessing.
Drawing several words per round speeds things up at larger parties: generate five, let the drawer work through them in order, and score one point per word guessed before the timer runs out. Drawing again gives a fresh set with no repeats inside the same draw.
Frequently asked questions
Are the words random every time?
Yes. Each draw picks words at random from the list for the difficulty you chose, and a single draw never repeats a word. Across separate draws a word can come back, which is normal over a long game night.
Can I use this for charades?
Mostly, yes. The easy and medium lists work well for charades, since concrete nouns and actions are as mimeable as they are drawable. Some hard words lean on visual shorthand that does not translate into gestures.
Does it work for online games over video?
It does. One player keeps the page open and reads the word privately, then draws on a shared whiteboard or holds paper up to the camera. Nothing needs to be installed.
