How the newspaper Jumble is built
A daily Jumble gives you four scrambled words, usually five or six letters each. Solve those and certain letters are circled; those circled letters then form a second, longer scramble whose answer is a pun tied to the cartoon printed alongside. The two stages are why people get stuck: the first is pure unscrambling, the second is a word puzzle with a joke attached.
This solver handles the first stage cleanly. Enter one scrambled word at a time and it returns every dictionary word that uses those exact letters.
Solving the final answer
The final stage is harder because the answer is often a phrase, not a word, and it depends on the cartoon's punchline. Enter the circled letters here first — if a single word comes back, that is usually it. If nothing does, the answer is a phrase, and the trick is to look at the cartoon and guess the shape of the joke before trying to fit letters to it.
It also helps to count. If you have eleven circled letters and the answer slots are drawn as 4 and 7, you are looking for a four-letter word and a seven-letter word, which narrows the guessing enormously.
Why a scramble can have two answers
Plenty of letter sets spell more than one word. The published Jumble has exactly one intended answer, chosen so its circled letters feed the final puzzle. When this tool returns two or three options, pick the one whose circled positions give letters that look useful for the punchline.
Frequently asked questions
Can it solve the final cartoon answer?
Only when that answer is a single word. Most final answers are phrases built as a pun on the cartoon, and no letter solver can supply the joke. Use it to confirm candidate words, and use the picture for the rest.
The Jumble answer has a hyphen or apostrophe. What now?
Enter only the letters and ignore the punctuation. The solver strips non-letters anyway. Just remember that a hyphenated answer will come back as two separate words rather than as the printed form.
Are Jumble words always common English?
The four opening scrambles almost always are — the puzzle is meant to be solvable over coffee. If a result here looks obscure, it is usually not the intended answer, even when it is technically valid.
Does this work for other scramble puzzles?
Yes. Word Roundup, Scramble squares, classroom worksheets and most newspaper variants use the same mechanic. Anything that gives you a fixed set of letters and expects one word is the same problem.
How many letters can I enter?
Up to twenty, which covers every published Jumble comfortably. The longest scrambles in the final stage rarely pass fourteen.
