Seven letters means the bonus

In Scrabble and Words With Friends, using all seven tiles in one turn earns a bonus of fifty points in Scrabble and thirty-five in Words With Friends. That single rule makes the seven-letter list the most valuable study material in the game after the two-letter list, and for the opposite reason: not frequency, but payoff.

The play is called a bingo in Scrabble and a bingo or a seven-letter play elsewhere. A single bingo often decides a game between evenly matched players, because fifty points is roughly two ordinary turns of scoring handed over at once.

The stems worth memorising

Strong players do not memorise seven-letter words; they memorise six-letter stems that combine with many different seventh letters. SATIRE, RETINA and TISANE are the classic examples — each forms a valid seven-letter word with a large fraction of the alphabet.

The practical consequence is a rack-management habit: when your rack is close to one of these stems, keeping the stem intact and discarding the odd letter is usually better than taking a small score now. You are buying a large chance at fifty points next turn.

Making the list usable

A complete seven-letter list is far too long to read. The way in is to filter by the letters you actually hold, which is what the unscrambler does directly — but browsing by a required letter is useful for study, since it shows you which sevens are reachable when you are stuck with a J or a V.

Sorting by frequency matters here too. A seven-letter word nobody recognises may be valid, but playing it against an opponent who will challenge it is a different decision from playing one everyone knows.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a seven-letter play worth?

Fifty bonus points in Scrabble, thirty-five in Words With Friends, on top of the word's own score. That is typically the single largest swing available in a normal turn.

What is a stem and why do players learn them?

A six-letter combination that forms a valid seven-letter word with many different added letters. Learning a handful of high-yield stems converts into far more bingos than trying to memorise seven-letter words individually.

Should I always go for the seven-letter play?

No. Holding a rack for several turns waiting for a bingo that never arrives loses more than it gains. The judgement is whether your current rack is genuinely close to a known stem, or merely feels promising.
