The length that rewards structure

Six-letter words sit at the point where prefixes and suffixes start doing most of the work. A large share of them are a four-letter root plus -ED, -ER, -ES or -LY, or a root with RE- or UN- attached. Seeing the structure rather than the whole word is what makes them findable under time pressure.

That is a genuinely useful habit for anagram games. Given seven tiles, checking whether you hold -ING, -ERS or -IER and then asking what root the remaining letters form is far faster than scanning permutations, and it finds six-letter answers that raw staring misses.

Six letters in board play

On a Scrabble or Words With Friends board, a six-letter word usually means you kept one tile back, and there is a real argument for that. Playing six and holding a good letter often beats playing seven with an awkward leave, because the tile you keep shapes the rack you draw into.

Six-letter plays also reach across more of the board than shorter ones, which makes them the practical way to hit two premium squares in a single turn. That is typically worth more than the extra tile a seven-letter play would use.

Working the list

Filtering by a letter you must use is the most productive way into a six-letter list. If your rack forces an awkward letter, seeing every six-letter word containing it turns a stuck turn into a choice between options.

It is also worth browsing this length simply to build recognition. Six-letter words are common enough to appear constantly in puzzles and uncommon enough that most players have gaps, and the gaps are where turns get lost.
