The Wordle length

Five letters was an ordinary word length until 2021, when Wordle made it the most-searched word length on the internet. The puzzle's fixed five-letter grid turned a linguistic footnote into a daily habit for millions of people, and most visitors to a list like this one arrive with a specific grid in mind.

What makes five letters work for that format is balance. There are enough five-letter words for the answer to be genuinely uncertain, but the space is small enough that six guesses is a fair budget. At four letters the puzzle would be trivial; at seven it would be luck.

Opening words and why they differ

The long-running argument about the best opening word comes down to what you are optimising. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO maximise vowels, which tells you a lot about the word's shape. Words like CRANE, SLATE and RAISE mix common consonants with common vowels and tend to eliminate more candidates on average.

Both approaches are defensible, and the difference between a good opener and a great one is smaller than the difference between a good opener and a careless second guess. Using your second word to test five entirely new letters, rather than rearranging the first, is worth more than optimising the opener.

Reading a five-letter list usefully

A raw alphabetical list of every five-letter word is too long to scan when you have two yellow letters and a grey row. The filters are what make it usable: narrow by a known letter position, exclude letters you have ruled out, and the list drops from thousands to a handful.

Sorting by everyday frequency helps more here than in any other length, because puzzle answers are drawn from common vocabulary rather than the full dictionary. The obscure entries are valid words, but they are rarely the answer you are looking for.
