The most common word length in English

Four letters is roughly where written English concentrates. More distinct words exist at longer lengths, but four-letter words appear more often in ordinary text than words of any other length, which makes this list the closest thing to a map of everyday vocabulary.

For word games that property cuts both ways. The words are familiar, so you find them quickly — but so does everyone else, and a four-letter play rarely wins a game on its own. Their value is in consistency: there is almost always a four-letter word available from any rack.

Four letters in puzzle formats

Several game formats are built specifically on this length. Word ladders use four-letter words more than any other because the space has enough neighbours for interesting paths without becoming trivial. Boggle scoring typically starts rewarding at four letters, which makes them the baseline unit of a round.

In anagram games with six or seven tiles, four-letter answers are usually the bulk of what a strong player finds. The seven-letter answer is worth more, but it appears in a minority of racks; the four-letter answers appear in nearly all of them.

Using the list well

Sorting by tile value rather than alphabetically is the practical move here. A four-letter word built from common letters scores in the teens; one that places a J or a Z on a premium square can triple that from the same number of tiles.

It is also worth scanning for the four-letter words that contain awkward letter pairs — words with two Us, or a Q without a following U. Those are the entries that solve a rack nobody else at the table can solve.
