Ten-letter words belong mostly to crossword grids and word searches. They are too long for rack play in any practical sense, and their interest is in pattern matching: you know some letters, you know the length, and you need what fits.
A standard fifteen-by-fifteen crossword grid has room for several ten-letter entries, and they are usually the anchors the rest of the puzzle hangs on. Solving one early tends to unlock a whole corner.
Recognising the shapes
Almost every ten-letter word is transparently constructed: a prefix, a root, and one or two suffixes. Once you see -ATION, -MENT or -NESS at the end, the problem shrinks to identifying a six- or seven-letter root, which is a far easier task.
Compound words form the other large group. Two familiar five-letter words joined together account for a surprising share of the list, and they are the ones that resist suffix-spotting because there is no affix to find.
Filtering rather than reading
A ten-letter list is not something to read through. It is something to filter. Constraining by a letter in a known position, or by a letter the word must contain, is what turns thousands of entries into a shortlist.
For word search puzzles, the useful filter is usually the first letter plus the length, since that is what you can see in the grid before you have committed to a direction.
Why long entries anchor a grid
In a symmetrical crossword, the long entries are placed first and everything else is built around them. That is a construction constraint, not an aesthetic choice: the grid has to interlock, and the longest words determine where the interlocking happens.
For the solver, this means a ten-letter answer is worth disproportionate effort. Cracking one hands you a confirmed letter in as many as ten crossing entries at once, which typically cascades through an entire corner of the puzzle.
It also explains why setters often make the long entries the most guessable clues in a hard puzzle. If the anchors were impossible, the grid would have no way in at all, so the difficulty usually lives in the short fill instead.
